UAE’s most visited metropolitan – Dubai struggles with heavy traffic around the clock. His Highness. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, has announced a collaboration with Elon Musk on the new underground Dubai Loop project.
The announcement that was made at the World Government Summit 2025 by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai in partnership with Elon Musk’s Company – The Boring Company to launch, the Dubai Loop – a pilot of a 17km tunnel featuring 11 stations designed to transport over 20,000 passengers per hour. According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the long-term plan is to construct a citywide underground transportation system.
The project entails a high-speed electric system with up to 160kmph – which will reduce travel time to just a few minutes.
During the signing ceremony, Elon Musk called it a ‘wormhole’ and shared that since the loop system is constructed underground, it is immune to any weather conditions and the transportation will remain unhindered. It is one of the safest places one can be in situations like earthquakes and blizzards.

The Dubai Loop will be identical to the Las Vegas Loop, inaugurated in 2021 by the same company – Elon Musk’s The Boring Company, and is successfully operational without any reports of loss, damage, or accidents.
Key Features of The Dubai Loop System:
- Reduced travel time – with exceptionally high speed, zero distractions, and safety, the travel time will be reduced to just a few minutes.
- Capacity Increase – aiming to handle over 100,00 passengers an hour, it will potentially cut neck-to-neck rush during peak hours.
- Strengthens Sustainability – Utilizing electric vehicles within a controlled environment, the system will contribute to Dubai’s ambitious sustainability goals, aligning with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.
